Tough nut to crack: Disposal of coconut shell waste dogs Margao civic body

MARGAO: The presence of substantial quantities of coconut shells in the mixed waste dumped at the under-construction Western Bypass site in Benaulim has exposed the Margao Municipal Council’s lack of an action plan to address waste generated by tender coconut vendors.

MMC Chief Officer Gaurish Sankhwalkar, speaking to OHeraldo, revealed that the civic body is in the process of procuring machinery to facilitate the disposal of coconut shells. He hinted at taking strict action, including banning their business, against tender coconut vendors found dumping shells on roadsides in the future.

The commercial town of Margao has witnessed incidents of coconut shells deliberately set on fire on the roadsides, contributing to pollution. The CO stated, “The municipality has recognised the urgency of the situation and is actively seeking a solution to tackle this environmental challenge.”

On Thursday, residents of Benaulim, along with the village panchayat, expressed anger over the dumping of unsegregated garbage from Margao in their jurisdiction, along the bypass construction site. Shockingly, large quantities of coconut shells were found in the waste.

Despite challenges, measures have been taken, including the establishment of the Sonsoddo disposal facility for wood items, said the CO. Proactive steps have already been implemented to manage the disposal of specific materials, such as wood and coconut shells.

“Dumping coconut shells has been a significant factor contributing to fires in roadside garbage. In response to this issue, a decision has been made to transport coconut shells to Saligao, where specialised machinery is in place for their disposal,” informed the Chief Officer.
