Tourism dependents urge govt to extend moratorium

MAPUSA: The dependents of tourism industry on Tuesday requested the government to extend the moratorium for three more months or up to January 2021.

Spokesperson of North Goa Taxi Association Nitesh Chodankar said, “The moratorium period got over in August. Initially, the moratorium was for March, April and May, which was further extended to June, July and August. We request the Chief Minister and 40 MLAs to help us and extend the moratorium for more three months or if possible even till January 2021. This will give major relief to the taxi owners, rent-a-car, bike, auto rikshaw and motorcycle owners who are totally dependent on the tourism industry.”

The tourism dependents claimed that with the COVID-19 pandemic situation, tourism business is in bad shape Nationally and Internationally and it doesn’t seems like the tourism business will resume soon and even if the business kick starts, it will take time to fall in place since it been almost five months that the dependents are at home with no jobs.

“We request the government to waive off the fines that are imposed on the road tax and come to a solution where we can pay the insurances in part payment mode since paying whole annual insurance amount at one time will not be possible,” Chodankar further claimed.

“We also request the government to waive off the loan interest at present because there is no income and the vehicle owners are finding it difficult to pay the installments,” Chodankar added.
