CANACONA: In a crackdown on private shacks and hut owners along Canacona’s coast, the tourism department has issued notices to those owners who have failed to clear their structures erected during the previous tourism season.
According to Agonda Sarpanch Navneeta Naik Gaunkar, the tourism department has served notices to about 35 people for failing to clear their structures, which were erected during the last tourist season that ended on May 31, even though a grace period had been granted till June 15.
Sources informed that the tourism department had also issued notices to about 150 people from the civic coast of Canacona Municipal Council (CMC), including Palolem beach, and has given them 12 days to remove the temporary structures.
Following reports of widespread allegations that several structures were still present at the site, tourism officials in tandem with local bodies reportedly inspected various sites in Canacona.
When contacted, All Goa Private Property Shacks and Huts Owners Association President Dharmesh Sanglani said it was wrong to conclude that the private property tourism business operators did not dismantle their temporary structures.
“As per the tourism department guidelines, we have dismantled our huts/shacks in given time limit and have stored the material in our own land by erecting temporary structure to protect it from rains and exposure to sun,” he said.
“It is difficult and expensive to transport and store it elsewhere,” he added.
