CALANGUTE: The decorative street-lights erected by the Goa Tourism Development Corporation Ltd (GTDC) from Baga circle to Calangute beach promenade, which were non-functional for almost two years, have still not been repaired even though the new tourist season has already started.
Calangute Sarpanch Joseph Sequeira said the State government has been neglecting Calangute despite it being the most popular beach in the State.
“We have been receiving step-motherly treatment. The Calangute panchayat had in October last year written to the tourism department and the GTDC to repair the streetlights and a high-mast lamp at the Calangute Association junction. Calangute is a tourist destination but the tourism department has been neglecting the coastal village when it comes to illumination of public roads and public places. We have written to the tourism department and the GTDC but so far haven’t received any positive indication. We do not want the area to remain in darkness,” the sarpanch said.
“The tourism department and minister keep on announcing all kinds of new things and building all these fancy stuff in the last few years, but there is no maintenance and finally it’s the tourists who suffer,” he said.
He also pointed out that the street-lights in the parking areas at Calangute and Baga are also not being maintained.
