PANJIM: The Centre for Responsible Tourism (CRT) on Tuesday emphasised the importance of building tourism on climate justice foundations as determined by frontline
communities in the Global South. The CRT declared that climate justice, not green investment, should be the guiding principle for the tourism industry’s future, aligning with the interests of communities in the Global South.
The CRT has been a vocal critic of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) and its corporate allies, consistently challenging their promises and practices. On each World Tourism Day, the CRT’s Tourism Action and Accountability Forum (TAAF) has called attention to the UNWTO’s perceived hollow promises and exploitative actions.
The CRT’s statement highlighted the current global situation, noting daily news reports from TAAF members’ communities worldwide, including Sri Lanka, Costa Rica, India, Peru, Palestine, and Brazil. These reports shed light on what the CRT described as the harmful actions of capitalist, imperialist, and western supremacist powers, along with their collaborators. The CRT warned that these actions are pushing the world to the brink.
“Tourism is not innocent in these agendas – it is complicit and instrumental. These green investments and net-zero promises are deadly distractions from what really affects the majority of the world,” it added.
