Tourism Trade Act likely on cards

Khaunte holds review meeting with Tourism Dept and GTDC to evaluate current status

PANJIM: The much-awaited amended Tourism Trade Act is expected to take shape as the Minister for Tourism Rohan Khaunte has pitched for quality tourists.

“A lot of things are expected from my side. You have to understand vision of the government, the vision is talking about quality tourists and it is not that it will not happen today or tomorrow. The roadmap, the infrastructure has to be created. We need to have Tourism Trade Act for which all the stakeholders will be taken into confidence,” he said while speaking to the media on Friday.

The minister held a review meeting with the Tourism department and GTDC to evaluate the current status and projections to formulate an inclusive roadmap for existing projects in tandem with exploring new avenues to regain Goa’s Global Tourism glory.

He told reporters that he met the officers and the concerned team to understand where the departments stand and before taking any further decision, what needs to be taken on priority.

He said that the Industry needs reforms, which can be done after amending the Tourism Act.

“We have to create a backbone, create infrastructure to get quality tourists. But we have to have a plan ahead. It is not about talking for today and tomorrow,” he said.

Khaunte earlier this week said that Goa will have the best world class tourist facilities that will bring in more tourists to the state. Former Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar, on the BJP’s Sthapana Diwas, said that show must go on and the new Tourism Minister should take up pending assignments while stating that he has no advice for Khaunte as the latter is well informed about the subject.
