Tourist Dept asks MPT not to interfere in shacks issue

PANJIM: Department of Tourism has now asked Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) not to interfere in the erection of beach shacks permitted by it in accordance with the Beach Shack Policy 2019-2022.

In a letter to the MPT chief engineer, Tourism Department pointed out that two shacks have been allotted at the Baina beach stretch and that both were demarcated in consultation with the MPT representative. Both the allottees had also made payments for the last three tourist seasons.

The department had also demarcated both shacks considering the pipeline of the Zuari Indian Oil Tanking Limited (ZIOTL) by maintaining proper setback as approved by the representatives of the MPT and the ZIOTL.

However, one of the allottees had brought to the notice of the department that MPT had stopped her from erecting the shack at Baina beach as there was no written communication from the Director of Tourism to their office, says the letter written by Director of Tourism Menino D’Souza.

The shacks have been allotted in pursuance of the government approved Tourism Beach Shack Policy 2019-2022. MPT shall not interfere in the erection of the shacks at the demarcated locations at this stage, the letter stated.

As regards obtaining permission from MPT, if any, for the shacks as approved under government shack policy, the same can be taken up at the level of government, D’Souza stated in his letter.
