Tourist taxi operators seek moratorium on taxes for ‘at least’ one year

A delegation met the CM seeking help for their survival; Seek not to be burdened with the interests on pending payments

Panjim: The tourist taxi operators have sought a moratorium on taxes for at least one year as the tourism industry has taken a big hit due to the lockdown in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. A delegation on Thursday met Chief Minister Pramod Sawant seeking help for their survival.

“We have requested the CM for moratorium on payment of various taxies like passenger tax, etc; as well as on the insurance and EMIs for at least one year. Our only source of livelihood is trough the taxi business and it has been shut down in the present situation. If relaxation is not given to us, we will find it difficult to feed our families,” said a taxi operator.

The operators have also sought that they should not be burdened with the interests on these pending payments thereafter.

The North and South Goa Taxi Associations had earlier sought from the government Rs 12,000 financial support to each operator along with the exclusion of recovery of EMIs and insurance till the re-commencement of the business.

They also sought relief from payment of road tax, passenger tax, renewal permit, renewal of authorizations, renewal of driving license, fitness, PUC, weight & measure (meter passing) and insurance.
