Tourists assault taxi operator at Anjuna

MAPUSA: Tension prevailed at Anjuna on Thursday evening after four tourists from Kerala assaulted a local taxi operator.

The incident took place near Starco junction when the accused, who were under the influence of alcohol attacked Sanjay Govekar, a resident of D’Mellowado, Anjuna with wooden sticks causing injury to his left cheek and this led to dire consequences.

Soon locals rushed to Govekar’s rescue and chased the assailants. The locals along with the victim marched to Anjuna Police Station and demanded the immediate arrest of the accused.

Following a complaint the police arrested Bilal Abu Backar, Muneer U P, Muralidhar E P and Ajmal P P, all natives of Kerala and presently staying at Anjuna.

A case has been registered against the accused under Sections 324 and 506 (ii) of IPC and ASI Deepak Halarnkar is conducting further investigations under the guidance of Anjuna PI Suraj Gawas.
