CALANGUTE: Calangute police on Thursday nabbed five persons within hours after they mugged a tourist and stole his mobile phone. Four of the accused are employees of beachside hotels.
Calangute PI Paresh Naik said a tourist from Mumbai Vivek Naidu lodged a complaint that he along with his cousins were assaulted by some unknown persons while taking a late-night walk on the beach on Wednesday. The accused also snatched his mobile phone and ran from the spot.
PI Naik said they immediately formed a team and traced the accused, identified as Vinod Chavan, Satish Rathod and Abhishkek Rathod – all natives of Karnataka and presently residing at Calangute and Canca while Prem Thapa, a native of Himachal Pradesh and Mohan Mondal, a native of West Bengal, both residing in Calangute.
During preliminary questioning, the accused disclosed that they had assaulted the complainant and also stole his mobile phone, Naik said.
Calangute police have registered an offence under sections 323, 506 (ii), 356, 379 r/w 34 IPC. Further investigations is on.
