CALANGUTE: The police on Sunday rounded up eleven illegal touts from the Calangute-Candolim area, bringing the number to 650 this year in the ongoing drive against touts in an effort to create a safe atmosphere for visiting tourists.
With most of them being repeat offenders, they were fined Rs 20,000, while first-time offenders were fined Rs 5,000 by the tourism department. If they are found doing illegal businesses on the beach again, they will be fined Rs 50,000, police said.
“Calangute police took action against 400 touts last year, and this year as of now, action has been taken against 650. The staff of Calangute police station are working round the clock to safeguard the interest of the locals and tourists visiting this beautiful destination in Goa. This action would be taken against these people, and the drive would keep going so that Calangute area would be very clean,” PI Paresh Naik said.
