Town at crossroads: Choking Margao with garbage

Due to the differences between the Margao Municipal Council and the concessionaire of the Sonsoddo Garbage treatment plant, Fomento Green, the residents of the 25-ward- council are suffering and the commercial capital of Goa is turning into a giant dumpyard.
With the civic body still reeling from the recent fire at Sonsoddo dump site, they are now facing an uphill task, to solve the mounting garbage issue. This was evident on Thursday, when they had a tough time, transporting the garbage to the dump site, in order to clear the waste from the plant.  And it is turning out to be a race against time for the MMC, which had to hire at least 11 trucks just for this exercise.  One of the municipality staff members, supervising the operation at Sonsoddo, said that the trucks had to make more than 50 trips, wherein 191 tonnes of waste was removed and then kept at the existing dump. The official added that so far MMC has managed to remove only 400 tonnes and that another 600 tonnes still remain inside the plant.
By far the MMC has managed to remove only 400 tonnes and another 600 tonnes still remain inside the plant, which would take at least another three to four days for it to be removed entirely. Against this backdrop, around 20 trucks of unsegregated fresh waste, was also placed at the Sonsoddo dump site.
Elsewhere, MMC had to face other setbacks, as its plans to get a junior engineer from Ponda as an expert to handle the situation, appears to have backfired. Sources stated that the engineer in question, has been conspicuously absent during the most critical stages of the Sonsoddo saga, MMC has been trying to deal with for the last two months.
Further, MMC had sent a vast amount of segregated wet waste from the hotels and markets, which they point out, could have been treated in the plant and has not been done so due to the ongoing stand-off.
Though the MMC managed to remove the waste from major areas of Margao Fatorda and other areas, garbage could still be seen lying in internal areas until late evening. The situation Ix expected to continue for the next three- four days.
