Trade Union disagrees on government’s revised minimum wages proposal

PANJIM: Trade Union leaders have said that the proposed revision in the minimum wages by the State government was low and demanded that it should be hiked based on scientific formula.

All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) General Secretary Christopher Fonseca said that the promulgation of Minimum Wages Act was long overdue since the minimum wages in the State were revised last in May 2016. After that there was no revision in wages except on VDA which was 92 paise per point. 

He said that the proposed hike of Rs 553 per day for unskilled workers was very low and demanded standard increase of VDA to Rs 1.65 per point. 

AITUC President Prasanna Utagi said that the minimum wages should be revised based on scientific formula. 

He said that the Supreme Court had also said that 25 per cent should be added to the minimum wages so as to meet the needs of families of workers such as their education, healthcare and recreation. 

He pointed out that the Central Pay Commission had also stated that minimum wages for unskilled workers should be Rs 18,000 per month as on January 1, 2016. 

Utagi said that the State government has been delaying the revision in minimum wages for the last many months and demanded that the government stop making statements and revise and notified it immediately. The minimum rates of wages in the State which were last revised in May 2016.
