MARGAO: Traders at New Margao Market in Margao have strongly criticized the Market Committee of the Margao Municipal Council (MMC), accusing them of unprecedented harassment. They have specifically questioned the motives of MMC Vice-Chairperson Dipali Sawal, whom they allege is troubling them.
During a media address on Saturday, Vinod Shirodkar, President of the New Market Traders Association, claimed that Sawal had been calling market inspectors and pressuring traders to close their shops earlier than permitted. Despite obtaining permission from the MMC and the Margao MLA to extend their operating hours by an hour, they have faced difficulties due to Sawal’s actions.
Shirodkar alleged that while no other councillor, MLA, or minister had caused them problems in the past, Sawal, as the head of the market committee, has been harassing them for some time now.
He further mentioned that they had received approval from MMC Chairperson Damodar Shirodkar to meet the current market demand for raincoats and other protective gear for school children. Shirodkar expressed disappointment that the councillors do not hold regular meetings, which could have allowed the matter to be discussed and decided upon. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, as this opportunity is only available now.
Shirodkar also criticized the MMC for its failure to carry out necessary development works at the market, accusing them of using the market as a scapegoat. He referred to recent comments made by MMC Chairperson Damodar Shirodkar about the low rent paid by market traders.
While Shirodkar acknowledged that traders adhere to all regulations, he asserted that any rent increase should be reasonable, such as 5-10%. He questioned the progress of the promised repairs and inspections that the MMC had previously committed to.
Shirodkar further highlighted the issue of water entering their shops, stating that traders have taken temporary measures at their own expense while the MMC has yet to initiate any development work.
He also recalled how the MMC did not provide any relief to them during the Covid-19 pandemic.
