Traditional Ganesh Chaturthi celebration, floats and idol immersion held at Adpai

The 17 families in the village jointly celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi and on the fifth day hold a procession of floats depicting mythological themes before immersing Ganesh idols in River Zuari

PONDA: The traditional five day Ganesh Chaturthi and idol immersion ceremony was held with religious fervour at Adpai with thousands of devotees bidding adieu to Lord Ganesh on Sunday.  

Adpai village in Ponda is famous for its traditional and unique Ganesh idol immersion ceremony that takes place on the fifth day of Chaturthi and is celebrated jointly by the 17 families of the village where thousands of devotees throng to see the floats depicting mythological themes presented by various groups of joint families.

North Goa MP and Union Minister Shripad Naik hails from one amongst these families and joined in the annual celebration too. NRI Commissioner Adv  Narendra Savoikar also participated in the procession. 

The village has a unique tradition of celebrating Chaturthi jointly by various families who come together to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi every year. Each of the seventeen families has around 100 to 150 members and make floats based on mythological characters with the Ganesh idol kept in the centre of the procession where devotees dance to the tunes of drums chanting slogans like Ganpati Bappa Morya, Jay Vithal Jai Vithal etc before immersing it in the Zuari river.
