Traditional vendors threaten to sell fish outside CM’s residence

VASCO: Annoyed and disappointed at the State administration for not stopping migrant fish vendors from selling fish along the roadside in Vasco, the member of Vasco Fish Vendors’ Society (traditional fish vendors) have now threatened to hold a protest in front of the Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar’s residence at Altinho and that too by selling fish, if the issue is not resolved within 48 hours.

Starting a month ago, tension between the traditional fish vendors and migrant fish vendors from Vasco has been increasing with every passing day. But surprisingly no political leader has come forward to resolve the issue, so far.
The warring groups had even made representations before the Mormugao Municipal Council and local political leaders seeking their intervention, but the same has turned futile.
Since a brawl between them last month, the groups have been lodging complaints and counter complaints against each other on a daily basis.
Notwithstanding the numerous police complaints, another brawl reportedly broke out between the members of both groups at New Vaddem, on Wednesday.
After the clash, the traditional fish vendors have decided to bring the issue to the attention of the chief minister by selling fish in front of his official residence.
“Even though we have lodged formal police complaint after some Lamanis and their sympathisers tried to attack our members at New Vaddem on Wednesday, we are not sure of police action against them. All this is happening due to lack of political will to resolve our issue. We therefore have given two days time to the government to resolve our issue, failing which we have decided to sell fish in front of the Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar’s official residence to express our disappointment with his administration. We will continue to perform similar protests until our issues are resolved and migrants are stopped from illegally selling fish along the roadside in Vasco,” said Caridade Pereira, president of Vasco Fish Vendors Society.
