MARGAO: Even as the North-Main pipeline of Margao’s sewerage network is yet to be commissioned, the people of Chandrawaddo, Fatorda have reported that their traditional well used to source drinking water have been contaminated with sewage. The residents also claim that they had written a complaint letter to the PWD on November 11, but their problem has not been addressed yet.
On Tuesday, several residents of Chandrawaddo
demanded immediate action from the Sewage
Department and warned
of holding a protest
until their traditional well is cleaned.
A well that caters the drinking water needs of nearly 40 people has now been contaminated, allegedly due to the leakage of sewage from the manholes in the locality. “This well is one of the oldest traditional wells in the locality and several people used to make the best use of this well till it got contaminated. Residents used to draw water from the well whenever their water taps went dry,” said Rosa Monteiro from Fatorda. Firoz Khan, another resident, told Herald that the residents are now facing a tough time due to the sewage seeping from the faulty network.
“The stench is unbearable, and we fear the spread of infection, as the well is surrounded by several houses. We demand that the authorities clean the well at the earliest,” said Khan.
“The sewage chamber here overflows whenever there is a problem with the North-Main pipeline,” claimed the residents.
