MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council Chairperson Damodar Shirodkar on Wednesday said that the civic body has taken a slew of measures to ensure that the feast fair is organised smoothly, without traffic snarls or inconvenience to residents, in Margao this week. The Chairperson said that nearly 300 stalls have been allotted at the fair, and warned that strict action will be taken against those doing illegal business on the footpaths at the venue.
“A team of MMC staff consisting of nearly 10 officials, along with a recovery van will be deployed at the feast fair venue so that immediate action is initiated against all those involved in illegal activities,” said Shirodkar.
“The civic body has charged Rs 1,400 as sopo collection fee and Rs 500 towards the garbage fee. At the same time, instructions have been given to the vendors that they will not be allowed to do business on the 8th day; the feast fair will only continue for seven days,” he added.
On Tuesday, a few councillors from the Goa Forward Party panel and other party leaders had demanded that the fair be shifted to some other location, to prevent traffic congestion issues on the Highway.
“We have prepared detailed plans and several blocks have been earmarked for parking. The SGPDA has also allotted space for feast fair vendors in their areas,” said Shirodkar.
The Chairperson said that the land which houses the fair will be further developed for parking purposes, as reporters brought to his notice that the same property was acquired for parking. “We will also take Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai in confidence before taking any decision pertaining to the said area,” said Shirodkar.
