MARGAO: The councillors of Margao’s civic body are pushing for an urgent meeting with the authorities and stakeholders in a bid to get rid of the rental bikes parked around the Municipal building.
In a letter to Chief Officer Manuel Barretto, councillor Mahesh Amonkar has demanded a meeting with the Traffic Cell, RTO and a representative from the New Market Vendors’ Association, to deliberate on the issue and find a solution.
He has requested the Chief Officer to initiate a strict action against all the rental bike owners and other motorists who are parking their vehicles around the Municipal building, depriving other citizens and visitors to the MMC of parking space.
It may be recalled that Amonkar had raised the issue a few days ago and had claimed that the rental bikes occupying the parking area were posing major hardships to commuters.
“Owners of rental bikes from across Salcete are seen occupying the Municipal area, and no space is left even inside the parking island opposite the MMC building,” he lamented.
Amonkar said that the police and Traffic Cell
authorities need to initiate some deterrent action to prevent such practices, as it also adds to traffic
congestion in the commercial town.
“An action plan is the need of the hour in order to crack the whip against the owners of these rental bikes, and to achieve this, all the concerned authorities, including the Margao Municipal Council, need to discuss the issue,” he added.
The MMC Chief Officer assured that he would organise the meeting.
