People commuting on the Campal road on Monday had a tough time, as traffic nearly slowed down due to the ongoing road repair works and union workers strike.
Massive traffic jams throughout the day right from Kala-Academy to Miramar Circle were witnessed causing inconvenience to commuters. The vehicles had to wait for almost 30 minutes to pass this small stretch which would normally have taken two minutes.
A mixture of three elements had hit the traffic flow; one being road repair works, second being the Sesa Workers Union morcha and the third being the Western India Shipyard workers strike.
The Sesa-mining workers union took the morcha demanding that the company kick-start the plant at Bicholim and reinstate them soon. Meanwhile, Western India Shipyard Ltd workers (WISL), along with family members, also joined the strike demanding regularisation.
Both the unions kicked off their morcha from Bal-bhavan, which almost pierced through the Campal Road leading to massive traffic jams.
“All the three things started at the same time, the road repair works, the Sesa and WISL workers union strike which choked the traffic” said Ajay Thakur, a local resident from Caranzalem.
However, the ongoing Campal road repair works also hit the traffic flow as half of the road was dug up with only half being open both ways causing major inconvenience to commuters.
Campal road being the main access way for hospitals such as Campal clinic and Manipal hospital forced commuters to take up other inner roads to reach the desired locations.
