PONDA: Ponda Traffic Cell PI Krishna Sinhari said traffic policemen have been deputed at the Opa-Khandepar junction, to safeguard the school students who wait along the narrow, congested stretch to board their buses.
The Traffic police department has also requested the Ponda Additional Collector to notify a one-hour no entry period during peak school hours, to restrict the movement of heavy vehicles like loaded container trucks at the Opa junction, said the PI.
He said this action has been taken by Traffic Cell Ponda due to the increasing number of accidents at the junction, where the roads have also been encroached by local businesses and vendors.
“We plan to halt the entry of heavy vehicles from 7.30 am to 8.30 am, and after school lets out, from 12.30 pm to 2.30 pm, until the rush of school children on this stretch has cleared out,” said Sinhari.
It may be recalled that the Goa State Commission for Child Rights had also inspected the Opa junction two days ago, to decide on the construction of a bus shelter to ensure the safety of students.
