Traffic issues dominate ‘Sunday Dialogues’

MARGAO: Traffic issues took centre stage at the second edition of Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai’s ‘Sunday Dialogues.’ At Ward 2 of the Fatorda Constituency, locals complained about vehicles being parked on newly-widened roads, which leads to congestion and defeated the purpose of the widening.

They demanded that traffic management in such areas be outsourced as the local traffic cell was understaffed, and hence ill-equipped to not only deter parking at ‘No Parking’ zones, but to ensure traffic discipline in general. They also claimed that the civic bodies and the traffic police were turning a blind eye to their problems.
“A clear example is the increased traffic congestion along the newly widened Collectorate-Agalli road. The road is used for parking vehicles, defeating the very purpose of widening. It is great deal of wasteful public expenditure,” said a resident.
The locals stated that outsourcing road management services to private agencies would lead to an ease in the flow of traffic and a decrease in the traffic police’s workload. The agencies could effectively monitor ‘No Parking’ zones and take action against unlawful parking.
The locals also stated that the roads in Fatorda could be used as a case study, and if successful, the plan of outsourcing could be implemented throughout Goa. They resolved to contact the municipality to set the ball rolling.
The gathering also discussed pre-monsoon works to prevent flooding, the streets’ lighting, and the law and order situation in the light of increasing thefts and burglaries. The government officials present resolved to solve the problems as the earliest.
