PANJIM: Major traffic jams during peak hours on Monday left commuters stranded along the Porvorim-Panjim highway.
On Monday morning, traffic came to a halt on one the arms of Atal Setu Bridge and Mandovi Bridges as vehicles were forced to move at a snail’s pace due to the traffic congestion on either side of the bridges.
This resulted in a major traffic jam at Merces junction and vehicles heading towards Panjim got stuck.
On Monday evening, there were traffic snarls at the end of the bridge at Porvorim and O Coqueiro junction.
The Traffic Police who were trying to regulate the traffic near the bridges cited the increased flow of tourists into Goa as one of the reasons for the traffic jams.
It is pertinent to note that since one of the arms of Atal Setu has been closed, there have been regular traffic congestions in Panjim and Porvorim.
Some vehicles who were trying to jump the line also added to the chaos.
Traffic Police said they have been regularly imposing fines on those violating the traffic rules to ensure discipline on roads.
