PANJIM: The traffic chaos at Miramar due to the Sharada Mandir School has now become a regular feature, creating a nightmare for thousands of commuters taking that route especially during peak school hours. The chaos recurred Monday, as some badly parked cars held up the traffic for over 15 minutes.
The Goa State Commission for Protection of Child Rights taking suo motu cognisance of the situation has given a deadline of 45 days to the District Administration to correct the mess or face legal consequences. Traffic jams and consequent arguments are a regular sight on this road opposite Sharada Mandir School, Miramar. Similar arguments erupted between parents on Monday as a car parked in the middle of the road, near the school entrance, blocked the entire flow of traffic. Parents are often seen parking vehicles in the middle of road that leads to long traffic jams. The elevated walkway was built as an option to ease off the traffic. However, parents and students have refused to use the walkway. Now the condition in which this walkway is such that it has discouraged the parents from using it. Protruding pieces of metal and an ill maintained walkway has become an eyesore. Armando Gonsalves, a parent and a concerned resident of Panjim said, “The elevated walkway is a waste of money and space. The better solution is to have wardens at Miramar Circle to stop vehicles and let the student be taken to school on foot.”
“The school management has to take decisive steps to stop these erring parents, with regard to haphazard parking. I wonder if the school management is even interested in solving the problems,” he added.
