PANJIM: The Goa Traffic Police launched an awareness drive on the old Mandovi bridge on Friday, to reduce the number of accidents occurring in Goa. The cops were seen standing alongside the bridge with 14 different placards carrying messages to avoid the main causes of accidents.
Panjim Traffic Police Inspector Mahesh Gadekar stated that “last year, there were around 3000 accidents wherein around 290 people died. This year too, 615 accidents have occurred wherein 62 people have died. At the official level, we have had several meetings within the Home Department and the Transport Department to discuss about how to reduce accidents. Today we held out 14 signages warning about the main causes of accidents. So we are trying to create awareness among vehicle users and reduce accidents.”
Asked about how some two wheeler riders blame the police when caught without helmets including using of foul language, PI Gadekar requested the two wheeler riders not to be aggressive. “They should not blame the police, instead they should listen to the police for their own safety. If they follow these signages, the accidents will be reduced and number of fatalities will also be reduced.
The traffic police stood in a line along the old Mandovi bridge and held out signages which read, “Follow traffic signs,” “Watch for zebra crossing,” “ No overtaking on the bridge,” “ Keep safe distance,” “ Stop speeding,” etc.
