PANJIM: In a bid to crack down on the menace of drunken driving, Traffic Police will now deploy its personnel in civilian clothes in and around bars and restaurants and popular party places.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic), North Goa Siddhant Shirodkar informed that these personnel will be tasked to carry out survey of vehicles parked in front of such places during afternoon and in the evening hours and pass on the details of said vehicles to the respective enforcement teams. The enforcement team will be stationed at the approach roads/exit points where it will be impossible for the violators to dodge the enforcement team.
The DySP in a communiqué to Police Inspectors of Traffic Cell stated that it was important for the police to adopt new prosecution tactics and devise new methodology to intercept motorists driving under the influence of alcohol as motorists are using various tactics to avoid Nakabandi points and enforcement teams.
“I have issued instructions to the Traffic Cell Police Inspectors within the jurisdiction of North Goa to form teams for this special drive to curb drunk driving. We have 60 odd alcohol meters, each Traffic Cell in North Goa jurisdiction has six to eight alcohol meters,” DySP Shirodkar said.
The police are stressing on curbing drunken driving following the horrific Banastarim accident in which three innocent lost their lives while three others were grievously injured after they were rammed by Mercedes car allegedly driven by accused person Paresh Sawardekar.
