Traffic snarls caused by road digging for laying power cables throws life out of gear at Shiroda

Local residents want presence of PWD officials at the spot while digging roads; have also sought deployment of police or home guards personnel to manage traffic flow

PONDA: The never-ending work of laying underground power lines to solve the power problem in Shiroda area is causing traffic congestion woes for commuters, especially during the peak hours in the morning and evening.

With situation turning chaotic during the peak hours, locals have demanded that police or home guards be deployed in this area to avert any untoward incident.

The work of laying underground power lines has been taken up on the Shiroda-Borim road, which is narrow and travelling through the area has becoming an uphill task. The traffic snarls caused by slow-moving traffic is resulting in employees getting delayed for work. Also, there are instances of minor accidents, resulting in altercations.

Instances of water pipelines getting damaged while digging for laying of power cables has made the matters worse as water supply to the local people have been adversely affected.

The residents have demanded that PWD officials must be present on the spot while digging roads, so as to guide the labourers and avoid damage to water pipelines.

Atul Gaonkar, an employee in private sector said, there are always traffic congestions when office-goers are on their way to Ponda in the morning and also while returning home from work.

“I always get late to work, and return home late these days. I can understand that underground power lines will surely solve our power problems, but at the same time there is a need to deploy police or guards to manage traffic during the day time where roads have been dug up,” Gaonkar said.
