Traffic snarls near Mangor Hill area annoy commuters

VASCO: Locals and commuters have expressed anger of the failure of the authorities to sort the traffic congestion issue prevailing between Gurudwara road and Varunapuri junction at Mangor Hill area. The problem of traffic jams here is getting complicated day by day, and commuters are facing a lot of inconvenience.

The Gururdwara – Varunapuri road intersects the national highway at Varunapuri junction and is frequented by vehicles throughout the day. Commuters plying to Margao and Panjim use this stretch of road which also leads to Verna-Birla junction, hence the number of vehicles on this stretch has increased considerably. Two-wheeler parking at the narrow stretch of Gurudwara-Varunapuri road is adding to the congestion.

Initially, one side of the road was utilized for parking two wheelers, but an increasing number of bikes in the locality has prompted the rider to park vehicles on both the sides of the road. The stretch also has numerous shops and houses. Most two wheelers are parked by customers that drop down to buy their daily requirements. Many times, mini trucks and tempos supplying goods to the local shops are parked on one side of the road stretch.

According to locals, traffic police are often seen issuing challans to riders for traffic violations but turn a blind eye to the haphazard parking along the road.

A few buildings also have their entrances on the road stretch, and residents often park their vehicles on the main gates.  There have been instances of altercation between residents and vehicle owners over parking in front of the gates.

A decision was taken by authorities to strictly follow parking on only one side of the road. However, the decision has not been implemented till date. Locals have demanded immediate intervention from authorities to avoid any untoward incident. Strict rules and implementation is a must, say locals.
