Tragedy Strikes as Five Family Members Drown in Shalmala River, Karnataka

In a heart-wrenching incident near Sirsi in Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district, five members of a family met a tragic end after drowning in the Shalmala River on a fateful Sunday. Local authorities, aided by fishermen from the community, have managed to recover the bodies of three victims, shedding light on the grim nature of the incident.

The identified victims of this unfortunate event are Mohammad Saleem (44), Nadiya (20), Misbah (21), Nabil (22), and Umer (16). The retrieved bodies so far consist of two males and one female, according to statements from the local police.

Initial reports suggest that the calamity unfolded when one of the children in the family accidentally slipped into the river. In a desperate attempt to save their kin, other family members plunged into the water, only to meet the same tragic fate. This incident marks the second drowning event within the state of Karnataka within a span of 24 hours, underscoring the urgency for enhanced safety measures.

The first incident involved the loss of two fishermen in the Arabian Sea. Their fishing boat capsized during an expedition off the shores of Shiroor Kesarkodi in Karnataka, falling under the jurisdiction of the Byndoor police station and located approximately 15 kilometres from Bhatkal. The consecutive occurrences have left the local community in shock and grief.

Authorities are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding both incidents, emphasizing the need for heightened awareness and precautionary measures to prevent such tragedies in the future. The resilient efforts of the police and local fishermen in recovering the bodies demonstrate the solidarity of the community in the face of adversity.
