In yet another harrowing car accident, a horrifying incident
unfolded as a Tata Nexon electric car carrying five individuals crashed into a
roadside tree in Porvorim during the early hours of Sunday. Tragically, three
young people lost their lives, while two others suffered severe injuries in the
accident. The accident appears to have occurred due to the driver losing
control of the vehicle at a high speed.
Abigail D’Souza (21), a resident of Merces, Valdrofe D’Souza
(30) from Badem-Assagao, and Shawn Fernandes (27) from Parra all lost their
lives instantly due to the intense impact. The injured survivors, Ninoshka
Fernandes (21) and Fiona D’Souza (25), both from Merces, were rushed to the Goa
Medical College and Hospital (GMC) in Bambolim for treatment. The vehicle
involved in the accident sustained significant damage.
One of the injured individuals provided a statement to the
police, shedding light on the sequence of events. According to her statement,
Fiona and Abigail, both residents of Merces, had attended a birthday
celebration in Quepem but were delayed in returning. Valdrofe and Ninoshka had
planned to pick them up, as they intended to celebrate Raksha Bandhan together.
They began their journey from Anjuna to Merces around 11:30 pm on Saturday, picking
up Fiona and Abigail along the way. Tragically, as they reached the Teen
Building bus stop, Shawn, who was behind the wheel, lost control of the
vehicle, leading to the catastrophic collision with a roadside tree. The impact
was so severe that Valdrofe was ejected from the SUV and lost his life at the
scene, as confirmed by the police.
Funeral arrangements for two of the victims have been
confirmed. Shawn Fernandes will be laid to rest on Tuesday, September 5th, at
10 am at St. Anne Church in Para. Valdrofe D’Souza’s funeral is expected to
take place on Sunday, September 10th, although specific details about Abigail’s
funeral are still pending confirmation.
