Transport Department finally cracks whip against cars with tinted glasses

Books 406 cases of violation across State from Feb 9 to 15; all officials directed to take stringent action and begin cracking down on violators

PANJIM:  The Department of Transport has finally decided to clamp down on cars with tinted glasses and penalise offenders after the uproar at the recently concluded budget session of the Goa Assembly when legislators cutting across party lines raised concern over spotting of such vehicles across the State despite there being a complete ban on their usage.

Acting tough against the fixing of sun control film on the side glasses of cars, the  Department of Transport booked as many as 406 cases of violation across the State from February 9 to 15 this year.

   According to sources, all the Assistant Directors of Transport were directed to assign duties to the executive staff including the ones at the check-post to carry out the special enforcement drive  with stress on vehicles fitted with dark films or tinted glasses and other violations such as non wearing of seat-belts, non-wearing of helmets, fancy or incorrect display of registration number during a period of February 9 to 15, 2024.  

The Assistant Directors of Transport, Enforcement, of both the districts, have been directed to assign duties to the Motor Vehicle Inspectors and Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspectors working at the check posts along with the enforcement staff and the drive will continue till the first week of March.

According to the sources, during the period of January 1 to February 25, 2024, a total of 779 cases of tinted glasses have been booked by the Department of Transport.

In the recently concluded budget session of the Goa Assembly, the ruling as well as the opposition MLAs raised concern over the spotting of vehicles with tinted glasses across the State despite there being a complete ban on their usage.  

The MLAs urged the State government to take more stringent action and begin a cracking down on the violators.   

During the calling attention motion, the MLAs pointed out that the some ‘influential’ or ‘known’ persons were unfazed by police action.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant assured Members in the House that the government will intensify the drive against the tinted glasses. 

Poriem MLA Divya Rane informed the House that the vehicle involved in a kidnapping attempt of a minor girl in Keri-Sattari had tinted glasses, according to the statement given by the parents to the police.  

She was supported by Margao MLA Digambar Kamat and Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas.
