PANJIM: In a crackdown on traffic indiscipline, the Department of Transport has suspended 23,402 driving licences for various offences under the Motor Vehicle Act, during the last six years.
According to data provided by the Department of Transport, this year till November, as many as 3,808 licences were suspended out of which 857 were for jumpingthe red light, 2,008 for over speeding, 5 for overloading of goods carriages, 164 for carrying persons in goods carriages, 482 for using mobile phone while driving a vehicle, and 292 for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
In 2022, the Department had suspended 4,415 driving licences, out of which 825 were for jumpingthe red light, 2,197 for overspeeding, 2 for overloading goods carriages, 248 for carrying persons in goods carriages, 888 for using mobile phones while driving a vehicle and 255 for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
In 2021, the department had suspended 2,681 driving licences, out of which 404 were for jumpingred light, 1,414 for overspeeding, 20 for overloading goods carriage, 59 for carrying persons in goods carriages, 640 for using mobile phones while driving a vehicle, and 144 for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Similarly, in 2020, the department had suspended 3,727 driving licences, out of which 441 were for jumpingred light, 2,012 for overspeeding, 18 for carrying persons in goods carriages, 841 for using mobile phones while driving and 415 for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
In the year 2019, a total of 4,544 driving licences were suspended out of which 356 were for jumpingthe red light, 2,053 for overspeeding, 3 for overloading goods and carriages, 45 for carrying persons in goods carriages, 1,050 for using mobile phones while driving a vehicle, while 1,037 were for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
In the year 2018, the department of transport suspended the licences of 4,227 vehicles, out of which 753 were suspended for jumpingred light, 1,544 for over speeding, 36 for carrying persons in goods carriages, 1,018 for using mobile phones while driving a vehicle, while 876 for driving under the influence of drinks or drugs.
