PANJIM: The Transport Department on Tuesday announced its decision to commence installation of digital fare meters for taxis from May 20.

Taxis covered by tourist vehicle permit/all Goa permit/yellow-black stand permit without the mandatory meters with automotive tracking device and emergency system will not be renewed for further operations. The order comes in view of the verdict of the High Court of Bombay at Goa on May 6 that digital meters be installed within 15 days.

As per the Public Notice, taxi owners irrespective of their registration numbers and jurisdictional RTI, may till June 30, 2021, visit any of four locations (listed by government) for making payment and scheduling meters fitment.

“No permit shall be renewed without fitment of digital meters with effect from May 20, 2021. Taxi owner must carry out fitment of digital meter of specified type, through authorised vendor as per the schedule (finalised by government). However in case of permit of taxi is expiring before the State mentioned in the schedule such vehicle should get the permission to get fitment done prior to the slot shown in the schedule on any working day,” the order reads.
