PANJIM: Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho has said taxi operators will be issued a warning by the Transport Department on the first offence when they do not use taxi metres. On second offence their taxi permits will be cancelled, he warned, saying there is large-scale non-use of taxi metres.

The Transport Department will launch a drive to check and ensure that taxi operators are using metres.

Godinho said that taxi operators are in the old habit of making one trip and sitting at home. They should work through the day, he opined. He also ridiculed the claim of taxi operators that tourists don’t want metres. “Whom are you trying to fool?” he questioned.

“By this behaviour they are inviting Ola and Uber to Goa”, he added.

Speaking on the installaiton of metres, Godinho said, “So far 85% taxi operators have installed the metres. The fixing of the remaining 15% metres will be completed in two months time.
