PANJIM: The Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho has shifted his stand on the order of issuing e-challans to traffic violators through cameras. He said that until people are educated about the same the issuing of fines won’t begin.
Godinho said, “E-challan will not be issued to the public until the change is publicised and people are educated about the same.”
“I have asked the Transport Department to advertise, publicise and after explaining the people we will issue the e-challans,” he said.
The Department of Transport had issued a public notice that the detection and penalising of traffic offences through cameras installed in and around Panjim will begin from midnight of May 22. The cameras installed under Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) were planned to start detecting and booking offenders through cameras installed at 13 locations across Panjim and some in Porvorim.
A total of 13 locations namely Divja Circle, Panjim, Custom House Junction, Panjim, Ferry Wharf Junction, Panjim, Kala Academy Junction, were planned to go live for booking offenders.
Transport Minister now said that signages informing the road user that he is entering a camera monitored road will be installed in order to educate the motorists of the E-challan system.
Referring to the allotment of a pre-paid taxi counter at the new Mopa airport, Godinho reiterated that it is not like Aladdin’s magic lamp where you touch and get your wish granted and that it requires proper procedure.
The minister said that the Department of Transport will issue a notification notifying the pre-paid taxi counter at Mopa airport and the process will be finalised within next two weeks or before that.
