PERNEM: Residents of Fakirpata in Pernem have raised safety concerns over speedy transportation trucks which move through the village throughout the day. Villagers said that these transportation trucks travel to Mopa Airport site, the place where the crushers are kept and the other sites through the village instead of using the highway.
The residents said that around 5 to 10 trucks pass through the village at one time keeping distance of just 10 metres between them. Due to this particular movement several accidents have taken place in the village with locals sustaining minor injuries while people have lost their cattle due to the high speed the trucks travel. They further said that they are unable to cross the road and the pedestrians feel insecure for pedestrians whilst crossing narrow road.
“The movement of trucks which starts at 5 in the morning continues till late night. They move with high speed and since the road is narrow it is turns dangerous for pedestrians and other locals to cross the roads. When the trucks come, other vehicles including
motorbikes get blocked since the road is narrow. May of our cattle have also died in the accidents,” a local, Vasudev Mavlankar, said.
“We are facing major inconvenience due to these trucks moving through the village. Many times we tried to stop the vehicles and have asked the owners to take the trucks from the highway but they are not ready to listen to us. They come in high speed and do not allow any other vehicle to pass since the road is narrow. There are school going students who walk to the school for whom this is very unsafe. They are supposed to take the highway and not the internal road. We request the concerned authorities to look into this and make sure that these trucks take the highway,” another villager said.
