PANJIM: As the
Taliban tears through Afghanistan, youth from the country studying in Goa speak
of being traumatised by what is occurring in their home country. While the
students said that their families are safe for now, they are looking at the
World for “peace”.
There
are around 35 to 40 students from Afghanistan studying at Goa University as
part of an Indian Centre for Cultural Relations (ICCR) programme that allows Afghan
students to study at universities across India.
“I
am not in a condition to speak at this point. I am under complete depression…
students are traumatised with what is happening in our country (Afghanistan)…
we don’t know how to react… just praying for peace,” Afghan Students Union in
Goa president Rafullah Hemat told Herald.
Asked
whether he or his colleagues have contacted their family members back home,
Hemat said, “Yes! We spoke to them today, yesterday and even earlier. They are
safe for now and we pray for their security throughout.”
Hemat
and his friends are updating themselves on the safety of their family members,
who are spread across the country, every minute.
The
students are looking at the world leaders for intervention so that the violence
in Afghanistan due to the Taliban gaining ground comes to an end. “We just need
peace,” he said.
