Treat citizens better, reduce waiting time for documents, NGO urges Salcete Civil Registrar

MARGAO: Niz Goenkar Fauz (NGF), an NGO, has urged the Civil Registrar-cum-Sub Registrar at Salcete to address issues and improve services for the public, stating that the current service is not in the best interest of the people.

In a memorandum submitted to the Sub-Registrar, NGF emphasised the importance of providing better service to the public and ensuring that government officials are accessible and approachable without any hassle. Pascoal Costa, General Secretary of NGF, expressed concern over complaints received from visitors to the sub-registrar office, highlighting instances where staff members allegedly treated applicants poorly.

Costa pointed out several issues, including the internet/ online resources being frequently down during working hours, limited application acceptance hours in the morning, and certificates being issued only in the second half of the day. He emphasised the need for the office to provide valid reasons for such practices and address the hardship faced by individuals unable to collect certificates in the afternoon.

NGF also criticised the lengthy process for issuing certificates, citing cases z documents issued by the sub-registrar were allegedly destroyed and reconstruction took an extended period – even up to one year for the re-issue of a birth certificate.

Additionally, concerns were raised about staff eating at their desks during lunch hours, potentially attracting pests to the office environment. “Why is there no pantry for the staff to have lunch? This is highly unprofessional,” said Costa.

Costa questioned the delay in issuing certificates, considering the government’s vision to make India digitally advanced globally. The NGO demanded prompt changes to address the issues highlighted in the memorandum and ensure discipline amongst government employees obliged to service citizens.
