BELGAUM: At a time when the nation debates on Kerala’s decision to be a liquor-free state, the new building of a centre for detoxification of liquor addicts in Belgaum and Goa region was inaugurated at Peeranwadi on Saturday.
Efforts are now afoot to set up a similar detoxification centre in Goa.
Bishop of Belgaum Peter Machado inaugurated the new building of the Hope Recovery Centre, which is being run by Claretian Fathers since last 15 years, along the Belgaum-Goa road via Chorla.
“Looking at the rising number of cases among Goans who are being brought to Belgaum, the Claretians will launch a similar centre in Goa within the next six months,” said Fr James Kannanthanam, head of the Claretians Karnataka province.
At a special Eucharistic service celebrated on the occasion, Bishop Machado emphasised the contribution of Claratian priests in the Diocese of Belgaum.
“Taking up tough missions like working for the de-addiction of liquor and drug addicts, these priests have rendered a yeomen service to the people of the region,” he said.
Taking reference from the Holy Bible, Bishop Machado said that the human body is a temple of God and hence, it’s important for people to refrain from any kind of addictions and vices.
“Many will receive hope through the Hope Centre. Instead of hating the addicts, we need to look at them like patients with an ailment in need of counselling and treatment,” he said.
Fr Kannathanam, Director of the Center Fr Pradeep Correa, Fr Sunny, Fr Binoy, Fr Johnny and others also spoke on the occasion.
