MARGAO, MARCH 9
Accepting the report from BITS Pilani which categorically negated reports that the Comba wells were contaminated with oil and grease, Inquiry officer, Deputy Collector Johonson Fernandes has recommended treatment of the affected wells with aeration and shock chlorination.
In his report submitted to District Collector G P Naik, Johnson has recommended to engage the services of Assistant Professor, Biological Sciences, BITS Pilani, Dr Srikant Mutnuri to oversee the process by engaging the services of the PWD and Municipality in coordination with the owners of the wells, so that the costs incurred could be shared.
“After having carried out the meticulous exercise to nail down the polluters, it is by one’s own volition that the wells have become useless for safe drinking water. Constant usage of the well water would have perhaps not resulted in the formation of iron content”, Johnson said in his report.
Moreover, the report cleared stated that the inquiries conducted by BPCL and HPCL by shutting down the two petrol pumps near Metropole revealed that there were no losses suffered by the petrol pump owners, indicating absence of seepage from the tanks.
“I have submitted the inquiry report to the district Collector for information and action. The reports received from both Dr Mutnuri and the Goa State pollution Control Board has revealed there is absence of grease and oil in the water wells”, he said
