MARGAO: Traffic on the Dandeavaddo-Gudi road was disrupted on Tuesday morning after a huge banyan tree came crashing down on the road at Sarzora village late last night.
Fire services were engaged in removing the tree this morning, even as the local Sarzora Panchayat body requisitioned the services of an earth-moving machinery to assist in the operation.
Sarzora Sarpanch Jacinto Fernandes said the tree might have got uprooted and blocked the road since around 1.30 am. “The tree came down on the road, blocking traffic since 1.30 am, while the fire services came to the spot only at 6.30 am,” he said.
Sarpanch Jacinto lamented that the fire services were not equipped to clear the tree. “They were armed with a cutter, but it was not working properly,” he said.
“Hence, the Panchayat decided to requisition the JCB. The firemen had no gear to protect them from rain,” he added.
Till 10.30 am, the fire services and the JCB were working at the site to clear the road for traffic.
