QUEPEM: Strong cyclonic winds with heavy rainfall created havoc in Quepem Taluka as many trees were seen uprooted and electricity poles damaged badly in the last 24 hours.

Power supply was snapped from midnight due to trees uprooting and falling on the electricity supply lines in many parts of Curchorem and Quepem.

On Sunday, in the Quepem market, 80 per cent of essential shops were closed mostly due to power cut as rain showers continued.

“The overnight strong winds and heavy rainfall affected the day to day life of common man on Sunday,” said Hilario Fernandes, a local. He said, “Many uprooted trees fell by the road side and some on the roads. Drainages were also flooded.”

The sudden change in weather mostly affected the Curchorem Electricity Department as many electricity poles collapsed and damaged.

Assistant Engineer Gunu Naik said one transformer at Mudheghal was tilted and damaged. Over all, Curchorem Electricity Department will face over Rs 1 lakh loses, which comes under Quepem Constituency.
