Tribal Political Reservation hopes shattered on World Tribal Day

PANJIM: The joy of the introduction of the Tribal Political Reservation Bill for Goa in Parliament was short-lived. It was a stark irony that the Parliament was adjourned and the Tribal Political Reservation bill was not discussed and passed, on the World Tribal Day. Now the major question hanging like a Damocles sword is –will the Scheduled Tribes get reservations in the Goa Assembly, ahead of the 2027 Goa Assembly elections? The Tribal Political Reservation Bill is likely to be discussed in the next session of Parliament.

South Goa MP Capt Viriato Fernandes expressed his disappointment that the Tribal Political Reservation Bill for Goa was not taken up for discussion in the present session of Parliament which was adjourned. He wondered whether the Bill would be passed in time to ensure that delimitation and reservation for the Goa Assembly seats would be done before the 2027 election.

Rupesh Velip, General Secretary of GAKUVED also expressed disappointment over the postponement of the Bill to the next session of Parliament. He said there were many other issues such as land and forest rights, awareness about tribal schemes, tribal sub plan and other issues which were pending.
