Trio held for Bhatlem burglary, gold worth Rs 9 lakh recovered

PANJIM: The Panjim Police on Thursday announced that it has arrested three persons and recovered gold worth Rs 9 lakh from them in connection with daylight robbery which occurred at Bhatlem in the capital city.

Addressing a press conference, Superintendent of Police, North Goa, Akshat Kaushal said the accused have been identified Jamil Ahmed (45), resident of Delhi, Yasin (45), native  of Ghaziabad, UP, and Sanjay Verma, a goldsmith from Delhi who purchased the stolen gold from the duo.

The SP said the burglary had occurred on March 21, 2024, and an FIR was registered in this regard under Sections 454 and 380 of IPC at Panjim Police Station. 

Statting that this is the biggest recovery of stolen gold in recent times, Kaushal said the duo came to Mumbai from Delhi and then from Mumbai to Goa via train.

”They hired a private vehicle from Margao, came to Panjim, committed the crime and fled Goa by train,” he said. 

”The accused committed the crime in Panjim with the help of local support and went back to Delhi the same day. They later sold the gold to a goldsmith there. Efforts are on to trace the local person who extended support to the duo,” he said.

   He said police are trying to find out if they were involved in other house burglary cases which had taken place across the State.
