The Village Panchayat of Taleigao, Corporation of the City of Panaji and the State Government will sign a tripartite memorandum of understanding as per which the corporation will help the panchayat to set up, use and operate a waste management site with funding from the State Government. Sources said the MoU in all likelihood will be signed on Monday.
The panchayat had requested the corporation to set up a waste management facility on land belonging to the Government and presently in its possession. The VP is presently disposing its waste on this land.
The corporation had accepted the request on the condition that the panchayat would allow the land to dispose municipal solid waste from the city. The said condition has been accepted by the panchayat.
The Government, too, has accepted the request of the panchayat and the corporation to bear the cost for setting up and operating the waste management facility as well as that of transportation of the waste from the panchayat and corporation areas to the site in Taleigao.
On execution of the MoU the corporation will commence work on setting up the facility and other supporting infrastructure at the site.
Sources said the MoU also specifies that the corporation will continue to run the waste management facility till such time the panchayat was fully confident of handling the site on its own.
