Truck driver trapped in cabin after mishap, rescued

CANACONA: A loaded multi-axle truck veered off the road and dashed against a side wall of NH66 at Karai in Mashem on Thursday.
The driver who was trapped in the mangled cabin for almost two hours was rescued by fire personnel after cutting the mangled parts of the cabin with a hydraulic cutter and spreader. 
Sources at Fire and emergency office at Mastimoll said that they received a phone call at 3.30 pm on Thursday saying that the driver of a truck which met with a self accident is trapped in his cabin with a broken leg and is need of immediate assistance.
Equipped with a hydraulic cutter and spreader, the emergency crew lead by Station Fire Officer R V Pednekar assisted by leading fire fighter Tulshidas Desai, fire fighters Constantino Colaso, P D Velip, V P Naik, V S Velip and G G Velip removed the injured driver Gaurisidhappa, a native of Karnataka, by cutting through mangled parts of the truck.
An ambulance which was already on standby mode took the driver with a fractured leg and other injuries to Canacona Health Centre and as usual he was shifted to Hospicio Hospital at Margao due to the absence of trauma centre in Canacona.
An eyewitness to the accident said that the driver looked to be in inebriated state. “There was no cleaner or co-driver when the mishap occurred,” he added.
