Truck hits roadside tree; driver, cleaner escape

CANACONA: A multi-axle truck carrying Khadappa slates hit a roadside tree as its break failed while descending Karmalghat in the wee hours of Thursday. The driver and the cleaner escaped with minor bruises.
The driver of the ill-fated truck S Rasool said that while he was negotiating a sharp curve on the Cuncolim side of the Karmalghat slope, the engine of his truck got switched off due to low air pressure, simultaneously the break stopped working and the steering got locked; with no other option the truck hit a huge tree standing on the shoulder of the road.
Before hitting the tree, the truck fell into a road side water canal which reduced the speed of the truck. “If it is not for this incident, the accident would have resulted in life threatening injuries to the driver and the cleaner of the truck,” a local said.
The truck was carrying a pay load of 25 tonnes of natural stones from Tadpatri, Anantpur district of Andhra Pradesh and was proceeding to deliver it to a dealer in Margao.
Locals speaking to this correspondent said that the accident occurred at 1.30 am and it was raining incessantly at that time.
