MARGAO: In a tragic accident at Ambora-Camurlim, a speeding truck overloaded with wood husk rammed in a shop-cum tea stall, leaving four persons including the owner and truck driver injured, while five others had a miraculous escape.
The over speeding 10-wheeler truck KA-04-B-8539 from Shri Kali Transporters, Belgaum, was on its way from Mormugao to West Coast Paper Mill, Dandeli-Karnataka carrying wood husk. The driver is believed to have lost control of the vehicle before it rammed into a road side tea stall-cum-store at around 4.20 pm. It then fell on its side, trapping three persons underneath, including the owner Nilesh Naik, Mifa Dias (35) and her daughter Neomi (14). It took over two hours to pull out the victims trapped under the truck as the authorities had to requisition the services of two private cranes, procured from Chowgule Shipyard-Loutulim and Dada Cranes to lift the loaded truck.
An eyewitness, Vinay Jogle from Loutulim said he had noticed the overloaded truck speeding on the turn and coming towards the tea stall. “ We immediately rushed out of the tea stall; unfortunately Mifa and her daughter Neomi, and Karpe, the owner of the stall, who were at the shop were trapped under the truck as it turned on its side,” he added. Fortunately, buffer space saved the three from being crushed under the truck, but left them with grievous injuries.
Maina-Curtorim PI Gurudas Kadam rushed to the site along with staff and made arrangements for two private cranes to lift the vehicle. DySP Mohan Naik, Margao PI Sudesh Naik PSIs and ASIs, fire brigade personnel along with locals assisted in the rescue operation.
The driver of the truck has been booked for rash and negligent driving and endangering human life under section 279 and 338 IPC.
