MARGAO: A trucker and the cleaner died on-the-spot while a motorcyclist was seriously injured in an accident on NH 17. The mishap took place early on Friday at 2.30 am. Truck driver Riyaz Ismail, 35, a resident of Kundapur, Udupi and cleaner Ganesh Naik, 24, also resident of the same area died on the spot.
Motorcyclist Poly Maura, 22, resident of Sao Jose de Areal, was seriously injured and is undergoing treatment.
According to Cuncolim Police, the driver of a fish-loaded truck hailing from Udupi lost control and first hit Poly and then rammed against a tree. The impact was so severe that the front part of the truck was completely damaged. Poly is in GMC and his condition is stated to be serious.
Cuncolim Police have conducted the panchanama. Some locals alleged that due to the lethargic attitude of PWD’s road department, accidents are taking place. Despite enough space, the PWD it seems, is not interested in widening NH 17. The width of the national highway is less than inner roads, they claimed.
