PANJIM: Porvorim Police seized illegal tobacco worth Rs 20 lakh on Tuesday after intercepting a truck with a Maharashtra registration plate.
Porvorim Police Inspector Paresh Naik said that truck carrying 105 jute sacks containing tobacco was intercepted under the supervision of senior officers. He said that truck driver Mohmmad Salim of Uttar Pradesh has been arrested.
Naik said the Salim was transporting the tobacco by concealing it in household articles. He said an offence has been registered against the driver and manufacturer for manufacturing the illegal tobacco product.
The driver and manufacturer have been booked under section 420 IPC & 87(A) of Goa, Daman & Diu, Public Health Act, Police said.
Further investigations are in progress under Police Sub Inspector Vishwajeet Chodankar.
